Cycling cols of Catalonia and the Pyrénées-Orientales: the complete guide

At the other end of the range, the Pyrénées-Orientales show a different face: less traffic, a drier climate, and the Mediterranean sometimes appearing at the summit — a total change of scenery after the cols of the Béarn or the Bigorre.

Col de Mantet, at the foot of the Canigou

21.3 km at 6.2%, up to 11% from Villefranche-de-Conflent: the longest and highest ascent in the massif, in the Canigou range, a natural sanctuary of Pyrenean wildlife.

Col de Jau, between two valleys

13.5 km at 5.9% from Mosset: a quiet forest road linking the Conflent to the Fenouillèdes, little travelled and shaded in summer.

Força Real, the balcony over the sea

9.1 km at 4.5%, up to 12% from Millas: the only col on the site from which you can see the Mediterranean on a clear day, a short climb ideal at the end of a trip or as preparation.

Good to know

The Mediterranean climate dries out unaccustomed bodies fast: carry more water than in the Bigorre or the Béarn, especially on Mantet which offers little shade. The col de l'Ouillat, on the Spanish border near Le Perthus, completes this little-known massif.
